Jaron Ennis's father doubts that Vergil Ortiz wants to fight
'Bozy' Ennis confirmed that they are interested in a fight against Vergil Ortiz Jr. and hopes it can be arranged soon
Derrick 'Bozy' Ennis, father and trainer of Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, doubts that Vergil Ortiz Jr. and his team want to fight his son next.
In statements to DAZN, 'Bozy' Ennis confirmed that they are interested in a fight against Ortiz Jr. and hopes it can be finalized soon.
“From what it seems, they don't want to fight. But we can move forward. We want the fight. I think it's a great fight for both of them. Vergil is a great fighter, you can't deny that. He has good people behind him. We'll see,” he said.
“I think whatever happens (when they fight), if Vergil is as good as everyone says, you'll see 'Boots' step up. They haven't seen anything yet. They haven't seen anything Boots can do. He's been training with heavyweights and light heavyweights and he's been knocking them out,” he added.
According to promoter Eddie Hearn, there is already a signed agreement for this fight to take place, and all that's missing is the Mexican-American's signature. Although Oscar De La Hoya made it clear that they will only accept the fight if the terms favor Ortiz Jr.
Remember that Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. were in negotiations to face each other at 147 pounds, but Boots preferred not to take the fight at that time. After this, both teams exchanged provocations, but now it seems that this fight will become a reality.
In his last fight, Ortiz Jr. showed no mercy to Lubin and finished him in the second round. In contrast, Ennis made a spectacular debut at 154 pounds by knocking out Uisma Lima in the first round and winning the WBA interim championship.
Vergil Ortiz Jr., 24, defended his WBC interim super welterweight championship and is willing to face anyone next.
The Mexican-American boxer maintains his undefeated record after 23 fights, 21 of them by knockout in his professional career. Meanwhile, Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, 27, is a former unified IBF and WBA welterweight champion, and made a strong debut at 154 pounds. The American fighter is undefeated after 36 fights, 31 of them by knockout.
