La Hormiga is close to the scoring title and Chicharito would have scored his last goal in a Chivas rout
Armando Gonzalez continued fighting for the Liga MX scoring title, while Chicharito finally scored perhaps his last goal as a Chivas player in the 4-2 win against Monterrey
The past, present, and future of the Chivas attack merged into a single story with the goals of Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Armando “Hormiga” Gonzalez in the 4-2 rout of Monterrey that allowed Chivas to reaffirm their direct ticket to the playoffs as sixth place in the standings. Without a doubt, a story that generated all kinds of emotions, and in the case of Hormiga Gonzalez, he once again demonstrated his razor-sharp form in his outstanding performance leading the attack for the Guadalajara side, while for the controversial Chicharito Hernandez, he represented perhaps his last goal with Guadalajara and perhaps of his career. Even with his goal, Hormiga Gonzalez put pressure on the race for the top scoring title with the Portuguese Paulinho of Toluca, who moments later would take sole possession of the Liga MX scoring title for the third consecutive year. Because beyond everything, the effort of both strikers allowed Guadalajara to add their third consecutive victory and their seventh in the last eight games, representing 21 points almost in a row for coach Gabriel Milito's project. They made it a true reality and perhaps a real option to break the title drought of the last eight years.
But in the end, the victory represented the ninth win of the championship, bringing them to 29 points and securing sixth place in the standings, thus entering the playoffs directly in a privileged position with a chance to be crowned champion, while Monterrey remained stuck in fifth place with 31 points.
Chivas were a hurricane in the first half
Chivas had a tremendous first half, completely overwhelming Monterrey, combining the successes and errors of Rayados that practically opened the door to the ninth victory for the Guadalajara team.
Thus, With the need for "La Hormiga" Gonzalez to score goals to stay in contention for the scoring title with Paulinho, Chivas went all out on the attack, and the pressure in the high zone paid off after 10 minutes when they pressured Fidel Ambriz, who made a mistake in possession, allowing Efrain Alvarez to capitalize on the error, cutting inside the defender and beating goalkeeper Santiago Mele with a shot into the bottom left corner. Then came three warnings from "La Hormiga" before finally scoring the long-awaited goal in the 21st minute, tying the game with Brazilian Joao Pedro, who had taken the lead in the scoring race with his 12th goal of the season. It was then that Armando Gonzalez, receiving a cross from Richard Ledezma to the byline, connected with the ball, catching goalkeeper Mele off guard and beating him with a header for his coveted twelfth goal. Nine minutes later, "El Piojo" Alvarado put it 3-0 and that's how they went into halftime with the firm belief that Hormiga Gonzalez would have another chance to score, as long as they maintained the same approach and intensity on the field.
Chicharito Hernandez's Tears
In the second half, Chivas started strong, hitting the crossbar with a shot from Jose Castillo, but then Rayados responded with two goals to bring them closer with goals from Roberto de la Rosa and Jose Canales in the 71st and 79th minutes, respectively, making a miraculous tie seem possible at 3-2.
But then came Chivas' reaction to hold onto their one-goal lead with the introduction of Chicharito Hernandez, who then scored in the 94th minute to make it 4-2, perhaps his last goal for Chivas and of his brilliant professional career.
