Luis Suárez doesn't rule out returning to Uruguay
After training at Inter Miami, the 39-year-old striker spoke about the possibility of returning to the team led by Marcelo Bielsa: “I would never say no to the national team if they need me, and closer to a World Cup.”
The former Barcelona, Liverpool and Atlético Madrid player explained that his leaving the national team came because he considered it was time to give way to new generations.
“At then time I stepped to the side because I saw that I had to give way to the young people. I said one thing that shouldn't have said. I already apologized to those I had to apologize.”
Suárez's retirement with Uruguay and his conflict with Bielsa
Luis Suárez announced his retirement from the Uruguayan team in September 2024, after a goalless draw against Paraguay in the qualifiers for the World Cup.
The striker closed his stage with Uruguay as top scorer in the history of the national team, with 69 goals in 143 games, figures that consolidate him as one of the top figures in Uruguayan football.
After his farewell, the attacker launched criticism towards Marcelo Bielsa, pointing out tensions within the locker room and questioning the management of the group by the Argentine coach.
Luis Suárez recovers prominence in Inter Miami
Since his international retirement, the forward has completely focused on Inter Miami, a team with which he conquered the MLS Supporters' Shield 2024 and the MLS Cup 2025.
However, the Uruguayan lost prominence during Javier Mascherano's time as coach, a situation that changed after the arrival of Guillermo Hoyos on the bench.
“At their time, Mascherano explained it to me and I understood it. After having less minutes you wonder what the reason, because the moments in which I participated weren't bad, but they are decisions that one has to accept.”
With the new coaching staff, Suárez returned to add consecutive starts for the first time since November.
The World 2026 returns to motivate Luis Suárez
The forward renewed with Inter Miami until the end of 2026 and recognized that he still maintains the desire to compete at the highest level, a situation that could bring him closer to Uruguay again.
“I still have that adrenaline, that illusion of wanting to continue playing. You realize that you still have a little brain. You are wanting to keep competing. You see on the field (when) you keep getting angry with losses and with bad passes, and keep enjoying when converts.”
Currently, Luis Suárez has two goals in seven league games and keeps alive the possibility of playing one last World Cup with La Celeste.
