The NFL sent a statement this Thursday to notify the 32 teams that several special bets during games are suspended following the scandals in the MLB and the NBA.

“In recent weeks, federal authorities have filed serious criminal charges for alleged illegal conduct in the context of so-called single-player bets. Accordingly, the “Four categories of bets are prohibited for NFL games," the league stated in its memo. What "probets" will be removed from the NFL? The categories referred to in the memo are: inherently objectionable, which is based on player injuries; fan misconduct or safety; related to officiating, which involves referee assignments, penalties, and replays.

As well as those determinable by a single person on a single play: for example, betting that a kicker will miss a field goal attempt or that the quarterback's first pass will be incomplete.

And predetermined, which involves speculation about who will be a team's starting quarterback or whether the first play from the line of scrimmage will be a run or a pass.

NFL strengthens betting controls after scandals in MLB and NBA

The NFL took action following the case involving 30 people in the NBA for illegal sports betting and even rigged poker games.

This week also saw the arrest of Emmanuel Class and Luis Ortiz for intentionally throwing balls on bets about whether the first pitch was a ball or a strike.

“From the early days of legal sports betting, we have recognized the particular risks associated with special bets and the corrosive effect they have on fan perception,” the NFL emphasized in its statement.
