Paris Saint-Germain beats Arsenal on penalties and is two-time Champions League champion
After drawing 1-1 in the 90 minutes and in extra time, PSG won the second Champions League in its history by beating Arsenal on penalties (4-3)
Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain met at Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary. After equalizing 1-1 in the 90 minutes with goals from Kai Havertz and Ousmane Dembélé. Through penalties (4-3), PSG won the second Champions League in its history. The French team joins Real Madrid as the only two-time champions in this new format of the tournament.
PSG went out with Matvey Safonov; Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes; João Neves, Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz; Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Arsenal began the meeting with David Raya; Cristhian Mosquera, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Piero Hincų; Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Ødegaard; Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz.
The first few minutes were a lot of study between both teams. PSG and Arsenal were under pressure on the opposite field and did not allow an easy start. This caused the first goal of the match to occur. An attempt to clear Marquinhos was blocked by Leandro Trossard. The rebound was left to Kai Havertz. The German took advantage of his speed and, when it seemed that he was running out of angle, he fired on the humanity of Matvei Safonov.
This goal favoured the English team. Although this may sound obvious, the reality is that Arsenal is a club that knows how to manage its advantages. It is worth remembering that the "Gunners" had only conceded six goals in this entire edition of the Champions League. With the result in favour, the English defence became stronger.
In 20 minutes of the match, Paris Saint-Germain could not make any goal. In fact, the Parisian team only made a safe shot away from the arch of Raya. The French team dominated more than 70% of the possession of the ball in this first leg of the match, but there was no offensive depth. In addition, PSG had two corner shots, but that is a point in favour of the English team and that was noticeable.
QUERY LENGTH LIMIT EXCEEDED. MAX ALLOWED QUERY : 500 CHARS
Even though PSG kept tilting the court, the clearest play of the first half also belonged to Arsenal. PSG conceded many goals in the season. The Parisian defense was not so solid and, in associative plays with a single touch, the felancies were demonstrated. In a succession of passes between Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz left the German facing the goal, but on his second occasion of the match he could not overcome Matvei Safonov.
Second Half
It took 55 minutes of play for the first shot to reach the Paris-Saint Germain goal. This first shot was a frontal free kick about 28 meters from the arch. The shot was Vitinha's, but the shot didn't worry David Raya too much.
After so much patience, PSG had the first play of great self-confidence and quality in the match. A wall between Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia destabilised the English defence. Cristhian Mosquera knocked down Kvaratskhelia in an attempt to regain the lost position. The 64th minute Ousmane Dembélé transformed the penalty into the 1-1 draw on the scoreboard.
Paris Saint-Germain's goal made the game better. Arsenal advanced their lines a little further and began to leave more spaces in defence. The match gained in intensity, but also in inaccuracies. With 13 minutes to go, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia continued to hurt his left side. Jurriën Timber, a substitute for Mosquera, could not contain the attacks of the Georgia footballer.
In the final minutes of the match there were many more clear chances to score. Paris Saint-Germain were more incisive in attack, but the "Gunners" were able to keep the result and extend the match into overtime. The French took over extra time without Ousmane Dembélé in the attack. The footballer, owner of the 2026 Ballon d 'Or, was replaced by a muscle injury.
Overtime
This extra time marked the end of a long season for both teams. Paris Saint-Germain seemed much more complete physically than the whole of England. However, many footballers had muscle problems, cramps and other symptoms of fatigue that conditioned the first part of the extra time.
The changes in both teams were not so decisive in the game. PSG tried with better ideas to finish the game before penalties. Luis Enrique's team, already with Gonçalo Ramos inside the field, produced more centers in the area. A couple of services demanded David Raya's clearance.
Arsenal gave up the ball just as they did throughout the match. PSG maintained long possessions, but the spaces left by the "Gunners" in defence were minimal. Arsenal only had one goal in 120 minutes (Havertz's goal). The English gave up the attack, but prioritized the defensive sector. Mikel Arteta's Arsenal finishes their participation in the 2026 edition of the Champions League with only 7 goals received.
Matvéi Safón vs. David Raya
The first in the penalty shootout were Gonçalo Ramos and Viktor Gyökeres. The Portuguese striker was the first to kick and did so effectively on the right side. Raya threw herself to the left side. Gyökeres did the same. The Swede also kicked to the right of the goal (1-1).
The second in the penalty shootout were Désiré Doué and Eberechi Eze. The French footballer fired a shot at grass to the right of the goalkeeper. For his part, the English footballer tried to trick Safonov, but sent his shot out of the goal on the left side (2-1).
Nuno Mendes missed the opportunity to go higher in the penalty shootout. The Portuguese finished on the right side, but David Raya blocked the shot. Declan Rice most certainly matched the run (2-2).
Achraf Hakimi also crossed his finish line and managed to put PSG up in the series. David Raya could not guess the Moroccan's intention. Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli converted his penalty with a good shot on the left side (3-3)
Lucas Beraldo overtook PSG and put Gunner on the ropes. Gabriel Magalhães had the responsibility in his loot to keep the penalty shootout alive. However, the Brazilian defender sent his shot over the arch of Matvei Safonov. PSG took the Champions League via penalties (4-3).
