The links were intensified by the statements of Gregg Berhalter, Chicago Fire coach. The former United States coach recognized the club's interest in acquiring the services of the 37-year-old veteran forward.
“I can speak frankly because he is no longer a Barcelona player, or soon will not be, and he is someone we want to recruit,” said the coach.
Gregg Berhalter refers to Lewandowski's link with FC Barcelona. The Polish striker has already said goodbye to the club. After four seasons with the Blaugrana team, Lewandowski will not renew with the Catalans.
"We have spoken with Robert Lewandowski and his representatives. I am convinced that a player of his level has other offers on the table, but our communication has been frequent and very positive," the coach explained.
His last season at FC Barcelona
Robert Lewandowski was a very used footballer in the last season of FC Barcelona. The 37-year-old Polish forward played up to 46 games in the campaign. Lewandowski saw minutes in LaLiga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The Warszawa-born forward logged 2,486 minutes on the field this season (the equivalent of just over 27 full games). Robert Lewandowski contributed 19 goals and provided 4 assists this season.
"We believe he would be an extraordinary signing for the club, for Chicago and for the entire league. A player of his caliber would elevate our project to another level," added the Chicago Fire coach.
