Nobody told you that Instagram keeps a record of everything you see: so you can use it to your favor
Instagram allows you to access your viewing history, making it easier to recover any reels you've lost
It's happened to you a thousand times. You're quietly scrolling through your Instagram feed, you start to see a Reel that catches your attention, but before you finish or save it, the feed updates and the video disappears as if it had never existed. o. You look for it, you look for it and nothing. That feeling of frustration is one of the most common among the platform's users, and until recently there wasn't a clear solution. Luckily, Instagram already has the answer that we were waiting for.
The good news is that since the end 2025, Meta implemented a feature that changes the rules of the game for those consumers mos videos on the platform. You don't need to save a Reel to find it again later. Adam Mosseri's own, direct tor from Instagram, was the one who announced the new directly through a Reel in his profile, confirming that the option is already ba available to all users. And the best thing is that it's buried in a menu that many people don't even know exists.
How to activate view history on Instagram
The path to get to the history is simpler than it seems. Everything starts from your user profile, that screen that you have in the bottom-right corner of the app . Once there, touch the three horizontal lines that appear in the top right, those that many completely ignore. That icon hides a lot more than what it seems.
After touching the three lines, enter the “Your activity” section. This section gathers a complete record of everything you do within the application. Inside you will find comments, likes, searches and, the es treble of this guide, the “Viewing history”. You just have to swipe down until you find that option and tap it. At that moment you will see all the Reels you have played, in chronological order.
What makes this feature especially useful is the possibility to filter content by date or by account. Mosseri explained c on detail in your ad: “You can sort it from recent to older or backwards. You can go directly to a specific date fica, choose a range of dates, or even filter by the account that posted the Reel." something funny last week on the profile of a specific influencer, you can go straight to that without having to do infinite scroll.
What to do if history doesn't appear in your app
If after following the steps you don't see the “View history” option in your account, you most likely need to update the app to its latest version. Instagram was launching this feature gradually, so at the some devices received it sooner than others. Go to your phone's app store, search for Instagram, and check to see if there's a pending update. Once you update, the section should appear seamlessly within “Your activity.”
Another thing worth remembering is that, if you want to save a specific Reel to always have it on hand without depending on history, you can use the flag icon that appears in the bottom corner ior right of the video to add it to your saved collection. So you have two methods available, one passive that records everything automatically and another active that allows you to organize what you like most.
Instagram view history is one of those changes that seem small but completely transform the way you use the app. You'll never go back to lose that video that made you laugh, that tutorial that you wanted to watch calmly or that clip that you wanted to share with someone. The feature is already there, waiting for you to discover it.
