37,000 Los Angeles teachers prepare for possible work stoppage

With 94% of the vote, nearly 37,000 members of the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) union authorized their leaders to call a strike if contract negotiations with the District do not progress. Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
The result of the vote, which took place between January 27 and 29, was announced Saturday morning.
The stance of the teachers who are members of UTLA does not mean that a strike will begin immediately, but it does mark a point of pressure in a conflict that has dragged on for a year.
