Changes in the labor market impact recent university graduates
According to a Cleveland Fed report, college graduates face greater difficulties finding work than before
A report recently published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland indicated that the current situation in the labor market is affecting recent college graduates, leading to high unemployment rates and long periods of job searching.
The analysis indicated that even the unemployment gap between workers with college degrees and high school diplomas has narrowed to its lowest levels in decades.
Researchers highlighted “Currently, the job search rate for young workers with a university education has declined to be roughly in line with the rate for young workers with a secondary education, indicating that a long period of relatively easier job search prospects for university graduates has ended,” they noted. According to the report, the unemployment trend was observed among young people aged 22 to 27, who are not only having difficulty finding employment but are also facing industries with increasingly automated approaches. The specialists pointed out that the incorporation of artificial intelligence “has exacerbated these concerns, especially since poor labor market outcomes at an early age can translate into persistent income deficits throughout a career.” They also commented that while university graduates are approaching the unemployment rates of high school graduates, the latter are still at a disadvantage. However, they mentioned that if the trend continues, it could change how young people perceive the value of investing money and time in obtaining a university degree. Finally, economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland stated that the trend they documented is based on the initial step of securing employment, rather than on overall labor market outcomes. “These details suggest a subtle shift in employment dynamics,”where university graduates face greater difficulties finding work than before, but maintain advantages compared to high school graduates in terms of job stability and remuneration once hired,” they noted.
