Four dead and 11 injured after high-speed vehicle crash in Tampa
A driver participating in street races lost control of his vehicle and ran over several people before crashing into a business
At least four people were killed and 11 others injured when a driver traveling at high speed lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a business in Tampa, Florida, authorities said.
Police said the car had been seen street racing moments before the crash.
Three of the victims died at the scene of the accident, while a fourth person died at the hospital One person remains in critical condition and eight others are stable, receiving medical attention at various health centers. Two others were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The driver was arrested at the scene. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who was arrested at the scene of the accident, Tampa Police confirmed. The official report states that Sampson was driving recklessly on Interstate 275 before leaving the roadway at high speed and crashing into a commercial establishment, impacting more than a dozen people in the area. Authorities added that the police air service was tracking the vehicle around 12:45 a.m. Officers attempted a pit stop maneuver—an interception tactic to stop the vehicle—but the driver evaded it and continued accelerating before losing control.
“A senseless tragedy”
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw called the incident “a senseless tragedy” and expressed his condolences to the affected families.
“Our hearts go out to the loved ones of the victims and all those affected,” Bercaw said in a statement. “Reckless driving endangered innocent lives. The Tampa Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol are committed to seeking justice for the victims and their families.” State and local authorities are working together to determine if the driver was participating in an illegal race at the time of the accident. Police have asked witnesses or anyone with video footage of the incident to contact the city's tip line to assist with the investigation.
