Manager of a McDonald is detained by ICE prior to the annual picnic with its employees
Christian Rodriguez entered the country in 2016 with a work visa
The manager of a McDonald's in Oceanside, New York, identified as Christian Rodriguez, was detained by ICE agents after attending an immigration hearing. The arrest occurred in the midst of a process that had already stretched out for years and kept his future in the United States uncertain.
The incident had a greater impact on his work environment, since the arrest took place on the same day that the restaurant's annual employee picnic was held, an event in which Christian used to actively participate as part of his team.
How the arrest occurred
According to Newsweek, Christian attended an immigration hearing in Bethpage, New York, where he faced a process that dated back several years. During that session, held on August 21, ICE agents proceeded to arrest him, marking the end of a surveillance that had remained constant regarding his legal status.
Prior to this hearing, and according to a coworker of the detainee, Christian had attended another appointment on August 7.
However, it was during the second appointment that the manager of said business contacted his employee to inform him that his visa renewal application had been rejected and that he was arrested.
The moment coincided with a significant day at his workplace, where colleagues and employees were waiting for him for the traditional annual get-together, little imagining that the day would end up marked by his absence.
What authorities say about the case
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that Christian had been in the United States illegally since 2016, which was the basis for the arrest warrant.
According to ICE, Christian Emmanuel Rodriguez Torrealba is “an illegal alien originally from Venezuela, who entered the United States with a B-2 tourist visa that required him to leave the country before June 3, 2016. Almost ten years later, he still remains illegally in the United States.”
In addition to the above,ICE said Rodriguez's criminal record includes convictions for assault and property damage.
A Life Built in the United States
According to Newsweek, after arriving in the U.S., Christian settled in New York, where he gradually built a stable work and social life.
With effort, he managed to become the manager of a McDonald's restaurant in Oceanside, earning the trust of his colleagues and establishing himself as a leader in his workplace.
Beyond his position, Christian was recognized as a hard-working, committed person who was close to his community, which is why his arrest caused surprise and outrage among those who knew him. For many, his story reflected the efforts of thousands of migrants seeking opportunity and stability in a new country.
After his arrest, Christian remains in ICE custody while his future in the United States is determined. The next step in his process will be to determine whether he will be deported or if he has a legal way to remain in the country.
