He applied for a Green Card, was detained and then released by ICE: I love this country
Rami Jilani Othmane was detained for 26 days in inhumane conditions according to the musician
The case of Rami Jilani Othmane, a Tunisian musician living in California, generated national commotion after he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), despite being in the legal process of obtaining a Green Card, due to an alleged expiration of his entry visa.
After spending several weeks in custody in conditions his family described as inhumane, Othmane was released. Despite this, Rami did not hesitate to "shift" responsibility away from the government or immigration authorities, telling Newsweek: "I never blame a country for the mistakes that may happen. I just want these mistakes not to happen to anyone."
The Release of Rami Jilani Othmane
Pressure from his family, his community, and local authorities was key to Rami Jilani Othmane regaining his freedom. According to Newsweek, the 42-year-old musician was released after 26 days in detention, a time during which his health, as he faces a cancer diagnosis, generated great concern.
Senator Sasha Renee Perez of California, called his detention “inhumane and unjust” and denounced that Othmane had been treated contrary to his rights as an applicant for permanent residency. “Rami is a husband, a respected member of the community, and someone who deserves to be treated with dignity,” she said in a statement.
After his release, Othmane expressed his happiness at leaving the detention center, in addition to expressing his joy at being back with his family: “I am happy to be back with my family. I am happy to be safe.”
He even took the time to declare his “love” for the United States despite the situation he had experienced: “I love this country.” After his release, Othmane reunited with his wife, who had led a public campaign for his case.
Rami's Arrest
Othmane's arrest occurred in mid-July while he was driving to a grocery store in Pasadena. During that time, Rami was on a FaceTime call with his wife, Dr. Wafaa Alrashid, who is a U.S. citizen and chief of staff at Huntington Hospital.
Almost immediately, the African artist presented the necessary documentation. However, the officers ordered him to get out of the car, something that Dr. Alrashid herself witnessed because the call was still in progress.
According to a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Rami Jilani Othmane was described as an illegal immigrant from Tunisia because his B-2 tourist visa expired more than nine years ago, so he was arrested and taken into custody at an Eloy Detention Center.
During the first weeks of detention, he was denied access to basic hygiene items and slept on the floor for 13 nights.
His wife also reported that he was held incommunicado on several occasions and that the facilities where he was held lacked basic sanitary conditions. These allegations coincided with testimonies from other detainees, furthering the debate about ICE practices. However, the Department of Homeland Security refuted these statements, stating that Rami met all the necessary conditions during his detention.
Rami's Future After His Release
Although he is now back with his family, Rami Jilani Othmane's future remains a matter of legal process.
The musician has stated that he wants to continue building a life in the United States with his wife and that he hopes that what happened will spur greater attention to the rights of those seeking to regularize their status.
