Texas governor orders investigation into hospital for allegedly offering maternity tourism
Greg Abbott orders an investigation into a public hospital in the entity for offering foreigners maternity packages guaranteeing US nationality.
Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, orders an investigation into suspicion that a public hospital in the entity allegedly offers maternity packages for foreigners interested in having their children born in the United States to automatically acquire nationality.
Through a letter sent to Stephanie Muth, executive commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the Republican president mentioned that Mission Regional Medical Center advertised “birth packages in South Texas” in foreign countries.
“Maternity tourism is an illegal practice that exploits the extraordinary hospitality that the United States and Texas offer to millions of foreign travelers each year.
Thousands of foreign travelers arrive in the United States under false pretenses to give birth and obtain citizenship for their children.
“The Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) must investigate the hospital, a facility it regulates, for any violation of state law and contractual obligations,” he said.
The aforementioned hospital is public and is located north of the border between Texas and Mexico, in a city called Mission from where it operates as a non-profit under the regulation of HHSC.
In response to the investigation in which the situation of the health institution will be determined, a spokesperson denied that the staff promotes this type of illegal activity and to clarify the situation he promised to collaborate with the respective authorities.
“Marketing materials related to maternity services are no longer used due to an unintentional misunderstanding.
We intend to collaborate transparently with local and state authorities. Our main objective remains to provide safe, high-quality care to all patients who request our services,” he assured.
Given the disproportionate increase in children of immigrants lacking legal status born in the United States and others born by foreign mothers who are usually passing through or temporarily in the country, Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff of the White House, warned in an interview with the Fox News television network that the federal government in power is considering the option of limiting the entry of pregnant foreign women into the nation.
