The US designates the Juárez Cartel and Los Viagras as terrorist groups
The Treasury Department decided to include the Juárez Cartel and the criminal group called Los Viagras in its list of terrorist organizations
In a new attempt to exert pressure in the fight that the United States is waging against drugs, the Treasury Department decided to include the Juárez Cartel and Los Viagras in its list of transnational terrorist organizations.
This measure is added to other sanctions that had previously been imposed on both criminal groups whose main activity is production, drug trafficking and money laundering.
In this way, the aforementioned organizations join the six groups already included on the Trump Administration's list, where the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel are at the top.
The fact that they are labeled as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist allows the US government to apply legal and financial tools provided in its legislation to combat them.
In the first instance, all assets related to these criminal groups, or in the possession and control of US persons, are blocked and must be reported to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
One of the first actions carried out by President Donald Trump upon his return to Washington to serve a second term, in January 2025, was to designate the cartels as terrorist organizations.
In this way, on February 20 of last year, it presented a first list with half a dozen of them.
Regarding the Juárez Cartel, it is known that it has operated since the 1970s with a permanent presence in the state of Chihuahua and with an operations center established in Ciudad Juárez.
Regarding Los Viagras, it is known that they are a criminal group based in the state of Michoacán from where they send cocaine to the United States while almost simultaneously producing methamphetamine destined both for the national market and for export not only to American cities but also to strategic points in Canada.
The fact that Trump has toughened the battle against the Cartels is due to the health crisis generated by the way they have flooded the streets with cheap drugs that cost the lives of thousands of consumers of all ages every year.
