The We the People Coalition announces the '2 Million Letters' campaign
A group of activists travel from San Diego to Washington to pressure congressmen and senators to approve immigration reform
The We the People Coalition (WethePeopleCoalition) began a caravan of vehicles yesterday in San Diego that will take them through a dozen cities in the United States until they reach Washington on November 17; The goal is to demand immigration reform from Congress, or in other words, to update the outdated immigrant registry. The nearly 30 members of the traveling coalition include lawyers, activists, and Father Alejandro Solalinde, who has dedicated his life to helping migrants. The coalition aims to deliver “2 million Letters for Justice” digitally, demanding that representatives pass immigration reform for the millions of people who have been unable to regularize their legal status but have lived in the United States for decades. “Our immigration system is fundamentally broken and has been frozen in time for almost four decades, while millions of families live in fear,” stated Luis Vega, director of the Nuestros el Pueblo Coalition. The activist explained that he feels now is one of the best times to pressure Representatives and Senators in Washington, as much of American society is angry with the current direction and methods. administration.
He emphasized that they have spoken with business leaders and Republican politicians who agree that it is time to legalize millions of immigrants who have been in the United States for a long time, complying with the law, but who today have to live in fear due to the raids and racist policies of President Donald Trump.
“The country is in bad shape all around. Many of the people who supported Donald Trump are upset and want change,” Vega said. "Republican millionaires, farmers, businesses that have been affected. There are many dissatisfied people who are supporting us and will vote in favor of the measure."
Vega stressed that this is not a new law, Instead, representatives in Washington will vote for a new registration date that could benefit nearly 8 million immigrants, including Dreamers and TPS holders. These are people who have lived in the United States for seven years, have no criminal record, and have fulfilled their tax obligations. Senator Alex Padilla submitted Amendment S.2468 in the Senate, and Representative Zoe Lofgren submitted the amendment in the House of Representatives. Both were introduced last July. Vega pointed out that the last time the registry was updated was in 1986, during the Republican presidency of Ronald Reagan, but with a Democratic-majority Congress. That is why it is considered time to update the immigration registry once again. He added that a few weeks ago they were received by Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, delivered a letter, and discussed the immigration situation, not only in the United States, but also in Europe and other parts of the world. I have assured that this week the Pope will give a message of support to immigrants in the United States and will speak about what the We the People Coalition is doing in the country. The Coalition expects to arrive in Washington on November 17 to meet with and lobby members of Congress, then hold a press conference for the public. To write a letter: As of yesterday, the coalition had already received 10,000 letters, so it invited everyone who supports the movement to visit www.wethepeoplecoalition and write and sign their letter (in any language they prefer) to increase pressure on representatives in Washington to pass the amendments.
