MG Marvel R: A Very Sensible Alternative to the Tesla Model Y
The MG Marvel R is a balanced and functional electric SUV, ideal for those looking for a good-sized vehicle with modern technology and a competitive price.
The Model Y is one of Tesla’s flagship models, but today new proposals are gaining ground thanks to a formula that seems to have good results: offering a lot for less.

One of the models that best exemplifies this strategy is the MG Marvel R, an electric SUV that doesn't try to dazzle with astronomical figures, but rather to convince with sensible arguments.
Behind the Marvel R is the MG brand, which although historically synonymous with British sports cars, is now experiencing a new era under the control of the Chinese giant SAIC Motor.
This new era has turned MG into a global brand, focused on offering vehicles with an attractive relationship between quality, performance, and price.
The Marvel R is, so far, the flagship of the range. A fully electric D-segment SUV, aimed at consumers looking for interior space, well-presented technology, and more affordable prices than its direct competitors.
From China to the world: the expansion of MG
Although in some markets such as Spain the Marvel R has arrived with an air of novelty, its history is not recent. In fact, this model has been available in China since 2018 under the Roewe brand, although with the same name: Marvel R.
Its arrival in Europe took place in 2021, already under the MG brand, taking advantage of the historical reputation it has in countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany.
In MG's European catalog, the Marvel R occupies the top, both in size and presence. It is above the MG ZS EV and the successful MG4 Electric, two more compact and economical models.
With a modern aesthetic, clean lines and a fairly mature proposal, the Marvel R enters a field dominated by names such as the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Versions and prices
The MG Marvel R is marketed in three variants: Comfort, Luxury and Performance. They all share the same general structure and minimal differences in design, concentrating their particularities in the level of equipment and mechanical configuration.
These figures do not include government incentives or promotional discounts, and are estimates based on the European price converted to dollars.
Mechanical configuration: balance and logic
MG does not pursue speed records or impressive figures. The Marvel R's approach is more sober. The base model has a rear electric motor that delivers 179 horsepower, with an estimated range of up to 402 km under the WLTP cycle. Average fuel consumption is 19.4 kWh/100 km, powered by a 70 kWh battery.
The Performance version, on the other hand, adds two rear motors and one front motor, raising the total power output to 288 hp.
This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, although the range is reduced to 370 km due to the higher energy demand. Its combined consumption amounts to 20.9 kWh/100 km.
Both versions share the same battery, but the fast charging system is not especially competitive, being limited to 90 kW in direct current.
Size and interior space
At 4,674 meters long, 1,919 meters wide, and 1,613 meters high, the Marvel R is positioned as a large but not excessively large SUV. Its wheelbase is 2,804 meters, which translates into excellent interior space. The weight varies between 1,810 and 1,920 kg depending on the version. The cabin is also one of the model's highlights.
What most catches the eye upon entering the vehicle is its central screen, a huge 19.4-inch vertical interface that serves as a control center for the multimedia system. In front of the driver, a second digital screen provides driving information.
Equipment and Technology
The Marvel R, in any of its versions, offers generous equipment: leather upholstery, mobile phone connectivity, a 360° camera, electric tailgate opening, a panoramic roof, and automatic climate control.
However, there are aspects that could be improved. For example, climate control exclusively for rear passengers is not available, nor are heated seats on all versions, details that competitors in similar price ranges offer.
Cargo and trunk capacity
One aspect that may disappoint some users is the size of the rear trunk. The minimum volume is 357 liters, a figure below average in this segment. With the rear seats folded down (60:40), the space extends to 1,396 liters.
The standard version also includes a second front trunk (frunk) with a capacity of 150 liters, useful for small items or charging cables. However, the Marvel R Performance does not offer this extra space due to its engine configuration.
The Marvel R does not seek to impress with superlative figures, but rather to win over with a well-thought-out proposition: it is spacious, well-equipped, visually attractive, and with prices that are still far from the premium threshold. It is aimed at families who want to make the leap to electromobility without breaking the bank.
Three adults can travel comfortably in the back row, and the absence of a center tunnel thanks to the electric platform allows for a flat floor that improves the feeling of space.
