Xiaomi YU7 the so-called electric car of the year is here
The new Xiaomi YU7, the Chinese brand first electric SUV, promises to sweep sales even before its official arrival at dealerships
In the automotive industry, certain launches not only raise expectations: they generate real shocks. This is the case of the Xiaomi YU7, an electric SUV that has not yet officially gone on sale and has already caused an unprecedented frenzy in the Chinese market.
Far from being just another debut in the growing range of electric vehicles, the YU7 marks a new milestone in Xiaomi's strategy to position itself as a dominant player not only in consumer technology, but also in sustainable mobility.
Just a few weeks after its official presentation, the model has unleashed such a level of enthusiasm that cases have been reported of people charging to give up their place in line.
Incidentally, there is already an early resale market even before the first units have left the dealerships.
This phenomenon is reminiscent of the one that This was experienced with the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, another resounding success for the company, and proves that the new model arrives with a fan base as solid as it is demanding.
A race against time
The official launch of the YU7 is scheduled for Thursday, June 26. However, Xiaomi has been working tirelessly for weeks to anticipate the imminent avalanche of orders.
In fact, the plant where it is manufactured located in China has intensified its activity to assemble the first units that will be delivered on the launch date.
As revealed by the Chinese media National Business Daily, Xiaomi's goal is to ship at least 500 units of the YU7 to its first buyers that same day. This figure reflects the logistical and productive pressure that the brand faces in a context of high demand and exceeded expectations.
The images leaked from the vicinity of the factory show hundreds of finished vehicles, ready for immediate distribution. This plant is the same one where the SU7 is manufactured, This is creating capacity challenges on a line that now has to handle two high-volume products.
Variable Production and Adjustments Underway
Despite its efforts to meet its initial orders, Xiaomi has not yet managed to stabilize its daily production rate of the YU7. A factory staff member, quoted by the Asian media, explained that “the number of units they produce varies daily,” reflecting the adjustment phase that the assembly line is still in.
The company intends to improve this situation as the initial deliveries are completed and direct feedback from customers is obtained. To this end, Xiaomi is also preparing to launch its second production plant, an expansion that, in theory, should be dedicated exclusively to the YU7.
However, the SUV is being manufactured at the original plant, indicating that the new facility has not yet entered full operation. Once ready, production volume could increase significantly.
Xiaomi YU7: an SUV with its own identity
One of the most striking details was provided by Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, when he confirmed that the YU7 “only shares 10% of its components with its ‘brother’, the SU7”. This technical difference represents a real challenge for the production lines, as it prevents smooth integration between the two models.
The lack of common parts has forced the plant to make specific adjustments for each model, which could be causing considerable delays in deliveries of the SU7, whose waiting list, in some cases, already exceeds 52 weeks from the time of purchase.
Massive expectation before the premiere
Although the Xiaomi YU7 has not yet reached dealerships, early demand has already caused unusual phenomena in the automotive market. On social media and Chinese user forums, there have been cases of people offering to give up their place on the waiting list in exchange for cash payments.
These types of practices, which are usually seen in consumer technology launches such as smartphones or video game consoles, rarely occur with cars. The craze for this SUV, however, has broken that mold.
In terms of pricing, the Xiaomi YU7 is expected to have a base price of around $30,000, with more equipped versions that could exceed $45,000, according to estimates by industry analysts.
While the company has not yet released the official prices for each version, an aggressive strategy is anticipated to compete with similar models from BYD, NIO, and other emerging Chinese brands.
