It's serious: GM stops deliveries of the Cadillac Vistiq for safety
A failure in the power folding of the third row forced Cadillac to recall thousands of Vistiqs and temporarily stop deliveries
Cadillac is going through a new episode related to the safety of its Vistiq electric SUV. The brand confirmed a review campaign for the 2026 and 2027 model units after discovering a defect in the electric folding system of the third row, a situation that could increase the risk of entrapment for some occupants.

The measure was confirmed through documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which detail the scope of the problem and the actions that General Motors has already begun to take. The decision comes when Vistiq sought to consolidate itself as one of the American firm's main electrical bets.

The system does not respond as it should
The investigation revealed that the problem appears when the third row seatback encounters an object while it is folding automatically. Instead of reversing the motion to release the obstacle, the mechanism simply stops, leaving the item trapped.
Internal testing showed that even with boxes weighing between 33 and 40 pounds on the seat, the backrest continued to apply pressure until they were immobilized. In an everyday scenario, this condition could represent a danger to children or short people who remain in that area of the vehicle.
Although Cadillac acknowledges at least six reports related to this behavior, the company assured that so far there are no records of people injured by this failure.
The investigation took as reference another case
The analysis began after a General Motors engineer reported the situation through the internal “Speak Up For Safety” program. The evaluation gained strength after comparing the system's performance with a preventive recall recently carried out by another manufacturer.
Although the official documentation does not directly mention the name of the company, everything points to Hyundai. That brand carried out a recall and suspended the sale of some of its SUVs after a fatal accident involving a folding seat.
Based on that comparison, GM decided to take a closer look at the operation of the Vistiq's third row. Finally, the committee in charge of security actions authorized the recall on June 11, 2026, while shipments of the 2027 units had already been stopped since June 8.
Thousands of SUVs will be involved
The documentation delivered to the authorities indicates that all Cadillac Vistiqs included in the campaign present the same potential risk. In the United States, 14,540 units will be inspected, while in Canada more than 1,400 affected vehicles were also identified.
As a preventive measure, Cadillac ordered its dealer network to suspend deliveries and deactivate the electric third-row folding system before marketing any units. Owners who have already received their vehicle will also be able to go to the dealership to request this temporary deactivation at no cost.
The definitive solution is already on the way
General Motors will replace the control module responsible for folding the third row. The new component will allow the backrest to automatically reverse its movement when it detects sufficient resistance, reducing the risk of entrapment.
The company notified dealers of this campaign on June 18 and plans to begin sending information letters to owners on August 3, 2026.
