Man harasses and touches Claudia Sheinbaum in the middle of a street in Mexico City
Claudia Sheinbaum joins the statistic where at least one in two women in Mexico have reported having suffered harassment in their lives
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, suffered a scene of sexual harassment during a tour through the streets of Mexico City.
While walking, the president's security failed and a man approached her as she greeted other citizens, attempting to kiss and touch her her body without consent.
In a video circulating on social media, the man is seen approaching the president from behind, extending his right arm to hug her and touching her inappropriately, bringing his face close to her cheek.
Upon witnessing this, her entourage removed the man, while the president walked away with a look of disgust.
Her security detail was not visible at the scene of the assault, and authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
The man's identity and whether he was arrested are currently unknown. According to the video, I appear to be in an inappropriate state, apparently intoxicated or under the influence of some substance.
It should be noted that since the arrival of his predecessor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the then-president eliminated the Presidential General Staff, a technical military body of the State that was in charge of the security, logistics, and protection of the President of the Republic.
Sexual Harassment in Mexico
In Mexico, sexual harassment is a serious problem with high prevalence rates, especially for women, according to various statistics. While there are no official figures, the latest National Survey on the Dynamics of Household Relationships (ENDIREH) 2021 estimates that 70.1% of women aged 15 and over have experienced at least one instance of violence in their lifetime, and 45.6% have been assaulted in public spaces.
In terms of crime, an average of 90 cases of sexual abuse are reported daily, although it is believed that these figures may be underestimated.
