Michigan mother faked bomb threat to stop school play that excluded her sick daughter
A Michigan mother was sentenced to 14 days in jail and 18 months of probation after admitting she made a fake bomb threat
A Michigan mother was sentenced to 14 days in jail for making a fake bomb threat in an attempt to stop the opening night of a high school play after her daughter became ill and was unable to participate in the cast, authorities said.
The incident occurred on March 12 at Lake Shore High School, where more than 700 students, teachers, and visitors had to be evacuated as police responded to the scene after receiving emergency calls, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.
Mass Evacuation and Police Deployment
The school released a statement following the incident, noting that the threat occurred during an elementary school presentation.
“With the assistance of the Saint Clair Shores Police Department and our staff, the building was immediately evacuated and everyone present left safely,” the school said, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Conviction and Legal Measures
The perpetrator, Crystal Royster, 42, a Detroit resident, pleaded guilty on November 13 to making a false bomb threat, a felony charge punishable by up to four years in prison.
On January 8, Judge Michael E. Servitto of the County Court of Macomb handed down the sentence: in addition to the 14 days in jail, Royster will have to serve 18 months of probation. The woman made two calls after learning that her daughter, who had returned home sick that day, would not be able to perform in the play due to school policy, prosecutors explained. Additional Restrictions: As part of the sentence, Royster must: “The defendant was sentenced today for making a false bomb report that triggered a significant emergency response. Although the court determined that probation was appropriate, her actions caused serious disruption and concern in the community,” stated prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
Neither the prosecutor's office, nor the accused, nor the school responded to requests for further comment.
