Who is Roxana Guzmán, the journalist kidnapped 2 weeks ago in Veracruz and about whom nothing is known
In 2017, Roxana Guzmán temporarily left the state of Veracruz for security reasons after the murder of her husband.
The disappearance of the Veracruz journalist Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez has set off alarms among organizations defending freedom of expression and the journalistic union in Mexico.
The communicator was kidnapped on June 2 by a group of armed men who broke into her home in the municipality of Nanchital. The event was partially recorded on video and since then his whereabouts remain unknown.
Guzmán is the founder and director of the digital media Pulso Informativo del Sureste, a site focused on the coverage of community events, security issues and citizen complaints in the southern region of Veracruz.
Before creating her own media, the journalist faced a personal tragedy that marked her life: in 2017 her husband was murdered, a situation that forced her to temporarily leave the state for safety reasons. Years later he returned to resume his informative work and found the journalistic project that he directs today.
Among the latest coverages carried out by Roxana Guzmán, a case of alleged police abuse that occurred in Ixhuatlán del Sureste stood out.
In this journalistic work, he documented citizen complaints about the actions of security elements, a publication that generated wide attention on social networks.
In one of the materials distributed, the phrase is heard: “How bad the police are doing,” in reference to the accusations against the agents involved.
After the kidnapping, the Attorney General's Office of the State of Veracruz opened an investigation and deployed search operations with the support of federal forces.
However, more than a week after the events, organizations such as Article 19 have pointed out the need to intensify actions to locate her alive and clarify whether her journalistic activity was related to the attack.
Concern about the case grew because Veracruz continues to be one of the most dangerous entities to practice journalism in Mexico.
Various national and international organizations have demanded that the authorities guarantee a thorough investigation and apply specialized protocols for crimes against freedom of expression.
