Hilary Duff confirms that her new song "We Don't Talk" It's dedicated to her sister
In a recent interview, Hilary Duff addressed the distant and complicated relationship she has with her sister Haylie Duff
Singer and actress Hilary Duff confirmed what many fans suspected: her new and emotional song, 'We Don't Talk,' is dedicated to her complicated relationship with her older sister, Haylie Duff.
In a recent candid interview with CBS Mornings, the 38-year-old star, known for hits like 'So Yesterday,' couldn't hold back her tears when discussing the topic.
The sisters' relationship
“Yes, it is. It's definitely about my sister,” Hilary confessed, visibly emotional as she paused to compose herself. “And without a doubt, the loneliest thing in my existence is not having my sister in my life right now.”
Hilary and Haylie Duff, who starred together in films like 'Material Girls' and recorded covers of songs like 'Our Lips Are Sealed,' used to share a very close relationship in the public eye. However, in recent years, the sisters haven't been photographed together, fueling rumors of a rift that the singer has now decided to address in her music. The song is part of her new album, 'Luck… or Something,' and the decision to include it wasn't easy. The former Disney Channel star admitted that she "really struggled" to make such a personal experience public. But the connection with her fans convinced her. Ultimately, Hilary decided that the song should be part of the album because it's her "truth." She added, "It's hard because it's me, and people know everything about my life since I was a kid, you know? And I didn't necessarily choose that part, but it's my reality, and honestly, it was healing to say it." The artist also reflected on how complicated it is to live under public scrutiny, where speculation about her personal life, including the song's origin, is constant. “Sometimes they’re wrong, and sometimes they’re right, and it’s all crazy to process,” she said. “I think I’m trying to let that noise filter in less and less.” Regarding her sister’s possible reaction, Duff seemed uncertain but true to her need for expression.“I don’t know how she’ll react, but it’s a very personal part of my life that doesn’t stay personal, so I’d better tell her what it’s like for me as an experience,” she explained.
“I’m not trying to say anything bad. It’s just my experience, and that’s all I want to share.”
The lyrics of “We Don’t Talk” accurately reflect this feeling of loss and the gap between two people who shared the same origins. In it, Hilary sings: “Because we come from the same house, the same blood / A different combination, but the same lock. People ask me how you are, and I want to say great / But the truth is I don’t know / What I always end up saying is / We don’t talk.”
