Netflix cancels the film 'Perfect' after Millie Bobby Brown's departure
The “Stranger Things” actress left the project, based on Kerri Strug's story, due to creative differences
What seemed like a winning combination—the Millie Bobby Brown phenomenon, Kerri Strug's epic Olympic story, and Netflix's backing—came to a premature end. The platform has canceled production of “Perfect,” the drama about Olympic gymnastics, after its star and producer, Millie Bobby Brown, decided to leave the project. According to sources who confirmed this to Variety, Brown's departure stems from irreconcilable creative differences. The actress, who rose to global fame playing Eleven in “Stranger Things,” was set to portray Kerri Strug, the iconic member of the 1996 U.S. gymnastics team known as the “Magnificent Seven.” The project, which was officially announced last September, was initially slated to be directed by Gia Coppola, who left the project prematurely. She was replaced by Cate Shortland (The Wolverine), with a script written by Ronnie Sandahl. In fact, Brown would not only star in the film but also had a producing role through her company PMCA, alongside Nik Bower (Riverstone Pictures) and Thomas Benski (Magna Studios).
The moment that defined an Olympic Games
The film aimed to recreate one of the most memorable moments in Olympic history. At just 18 years old, Strug helped the US team win the gold medal by performing a dangerous vault over the pommel horse with a severely injured ankle. After a perfect landing, her ankle gave way completely, and her coach had to carry her off the mat.
Despite the setback, Deadline reported that Millie Bobby Brown maintains a very strong relationship with the platform.
The actress has just finished five seasons of “Stranger Things,” the series she began filming when she was only 12 years old. This summer, she will premiere “Enola Holmes 3” on Netflix, and she has already wrapped production on the romantic comedy “Just Picture It,” in which she also serves as an actress and producer alongside Gabrielle LaBelle. Furthermore,Brown is moving forward with another personal project on the same platform: the film adaptation of “Nineteen Steps,” a novel published in 2023 that tells the story of her grandmother Ruth.
