Senior officials of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) say that India's preparedness to deal with the disaster has been much better than before, but there are many reasons due to which there is a danger of disaster in India. India's representative at IUCN, Yashvir Bhatnagar, says that the fragility of the Himalayas, increasing population and infrastructure are responsible for incidents like Joshimath in the country.
Let us tell you that Joshimath has been declared as a landslide affected area, where huge cracks have emerged in the ground, due to which many residential and commercial areas have been evacuated. Yashveer Bhatnagar told that whether it is floods or cloudbursts or incidents like Joshimath, the main reasons behind these are increasing population and expansion of infrastructure and brittleness of the Himalayas. He said that as environment activists, we do not want development works to stop but we want that development works should be done in such a way that they do not harm the environment.
ISRO's satellite image has revealed that Joshimath has shifted 5.4 cm from its place due to landslide. It is believed that the reason behind this is the ongoing Char Dham project work in the Himalayan region, under which the government is building an all-weather road to reach the Char Dhams so that the number of tourists in Uttarakhand can increase. Bhatnagar told that after the incident of Kedarnath, our prompt action in disaster has increased. We are better than before.
The environmental activist said increasing infrastructure development, tourism, agriculture and hydro projects in the Himalayan region would lead to an increase in extreme weather events. Due to changes in the environment, the incidents of unseasonal rains have increased in India. The incidents of cloud burst will also increase. Bhatnagar said that the government also needs to make the public aware about the environment. Bhatnagar said that due to global warming, the rate of melting of glaciers in India has increased and due to its effect, the risk of floods in India may increase.
