Plane with 242 people traveling from India to London crashes, no trace of survivors
An Air India Ltd. plane with 230 passengers and 12 crew members bound for London crashed a few minutes after takeoff.
An Air India Ltd. Boeing Co. 787 traveling from Ahmedabad, India, to London's Gatwick Airport crashed minutes after takeoff. There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board.
Gatwick Airport, the second largest in the London area, confirmed that the plane, which was due to land in the British capital at 6:25 p.m., had crashed.
The police commissioner of the city of Ahmedabad told the Associated Press that there were apparently no survivors from the crashed plane.
Sources from the rescue operation also revealed to EFE that emergency teams working in the area of ??the accident have not found any trace of survivors among those traveling on board.
These sources also indicated that hopes of finding anyone alive are already very low, while dozens of bodies have been recovered from the scene of the crash.
At least 169 Indian citizens, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian were traveling on the flight, according to the airline.
In addition, At least five people were reported dead on the ground. They were in the building where the plane hit, a student residence at BJ Medical College.
So far, no authority has released an official death toll from the plane.
According to EFE, the crew had issued a "MAYDAY" emergency call moments before contact was lost.
The air traffic controllers' report states that the plane took off from runway 23 at 1:38 p.m. local Indian time (08:08 GMT), according to the regulator. The crew immediately issued the emergency call afterward, but did not respond to further communications before crashing outside the airport perimeter.
