Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this letter, the Chief Minister has demanded relief to the farmers of Kaveri delta in the purchase of paddy. Let us tell you that the paddy crop spread over one lakh hectare of Kaveri delta has been submerged in water due to unseasonal rains. Thanjavur, Tiruvar, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu have been worst affected.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, MK Stalin wrote that due to unseasonal rains, the moisture content of the paddy crop may remain high. In such a situation, relaxation should be given in the rules of paddy purchase. The CM appealed and wrote that necessary instructions should be given so that the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation can give up to 22 per cent exemption to the farmers on the moisture content of paddy at the time of procurement of paddy. Along with this, five percent discount should be given in half-cooked, shriveled paddy and seven percent in spoiled, discolored paddy.
Earlier, Chief Minister Stalin had demanded a similar exemption from the Prime Minister for Kuruvai crop and the Central Government had also given exemption on the appeal of the CM. Now once again CM Stalin has again demanded the central government to give the same exemption in the purchase of paddy. The Government of Tamil Nadu had also sent a panel of ministers to the Kaveri delta region in the past to take stock of the situation and is considering taking steps to provide relief to the farmers based on the inputs received from them. PR Pandian, coordinator of the Tamil Nadu All Farmers Association, had also visited the affected area and appealed to the government to compensate the farmers for their losses.
