In the year 1911, King George V came to India to attend the Delhi Durbar. At the same time it was announced to make Delhi the capital of India (British rule) instead of Kolkata. That's why the British named this place Kingsway in honor of King George V. The name Kingsway was given by Percival Spear, a professor of history at St Stephen's College. Kingsway means 'the way of the king'.

This road as Kingsway was a symbol of the royal identity of the British rule. After independence in 1955 its name was changed to Rajpath. Which in a way was the Hindi translation of Kingsway itself. After independence, Prince Edward Road was renamed as Vijay Chowk, Queen Victoria Road was renamed as Dr. Rajendra Prasad Road, 'King George Avenue' road was changed to Rajaji Marg. These important streets were named after the British British monarchs.

But now once again changes have been made in history. This time Prime Minister Modi in his Independence Day speech of 2022 had emphasized on ending the symbols showing colonial thinking. However, many names have been changed in the last eight years. Then be it changing the names of cities or the names of streets and institutions. In the year 2015, the name of Race Course Road was changed to Lok Kalyan Marg, where the Prime Minister's residence is. In the year 2015, Aurangzeb Road was renamed as APJ Abdul Kalam Road. In the year 2017, Dalhousie Road was renamed as Darashikoh Road.

Let us tell you that this road was built by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. Both of them were considered famous architects of India during the British period. Both of them gave the work of making Delhi's buildings and roads to Sardar Narayan Singh. Sardar Narayan Singh had taken the contract for this. In that period, Narayan Singh made a very strong and economical road. Then heavy stones were thrown under the roads, then roads were made of sand and coal. The work of making roads in Delhi continued for about twenty years. Even today, roads are being built in urban areas around the world using bituminous (coal tar) technology. With the use of this technology, the roads become affordable and durable and also do not spread noise pollution.

It is worth noting that the scope of duty path starts from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Raisina Hills and ends at Red Fort through the streets of Vijay Chowk, India Gate, then New Delhi. Republic Day parade is held on these streets every 26 January. Going into the history of this route of about three and a half kilometers, it was first known as Kingsway and then Rajpath.
