Sheinbaum confirms derailment of Trans-Isthmus train in the Mexican state of Oaxaca
The Mexican president said she is closely monitoring the work being done by the Navy to address the emergency and the 15 injured
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, confirmed the derailment of the Trans-Isthmus train in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which is part of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT).
Through a message on her social media, the Mexican president said she is closely monitoring the work being done by the Mexican Navy to address the emergency.
“We are monitoring the work of the Mexican Navy to support users of the Interoceanic Corridor. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), IMSS-Bienestar, and the government of the state of Oaxaca are also participating. As we receive more information, we will provide further details,” Claudia Sheinbaum stated on her social media account.
It was through a press release that the Mexican Navy reported a “railway incident” near the Zapotec community of Nizanda, in the municipality of Asuncion Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, on Line Z.
“The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec reports that a railway incident occurred near Nizanda, Oaxaca, on Line Z, in which Nine crew members and 241 passengers were traveling aboard two locomotives and four passenger cars. The main engine derailed during the incident,” the statement said. “From the outset, immediate assistance was provided to the passengers, and coordination was maintained with local authorities to address the incident and gather the corresponding technical and operational information,” reported the Mexican Navy (SEMAR). For his part, the governor of Oaxaca, Salomon Jara, indicated that 15 people had been reported injured so far. “Preliminary reports indicate 15 people were injured, who received immediate attention, in accordance with emergency protocols, and were taken for appropriate medical evaluation,” the governor stated.
The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) is a megaproject that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through trains, ports, and industrial parks.
