Dmitry Bivol declares David Benavidez as his next rival
Light heavyweight fighter Dmitry Bivol admitted to feeling better after his recent surgery and spoke about what he expects for 2026 in boxing
Unified light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol is planning his return to the ring for the first half of 2026. After overcoming back surgery, the Russian expressed his interest in regaining his status as the undisputed champion of the division.
In an interview with The Ring, Dmitry Bivol mentioned that David Benavidez and Artur Beterbiev are his main targets to finish the year. The Russian boxer is seeking the WBC belt currently held by the Mexican-American fighter.
The Road to Cruiserweight
Dmitry Bivol's activity could restart in May with a mandatory IBF title defense against Michael Eifert. This fight will serve to evaluate his physical condition after six months of inactivity due to the aforementioned surgery.
“I feel better. I hope to be able to return to the ring perhaps in May,” said Dmitry Bivol, referring to his strength training. The athlete confirmed that his body is responding positively to the current workload.
New Weight Classes and Challenges on the Horizon
One of the options Dmitry Bivol is considering is moving up to the cruiserweight division in search of new titles. This possibility increases interest in a fight with Benavidez, who is also exploring a move up to 200 pounds soon. The boxer reiterated that Dmitry Bivol is open to fighting in another weight class if there is an opportunity to win a different belt. His team's plan is to finalize the necessary agreements once his mandatory title defense is complete.
