Tom Brady chooses his ideal NFL quarterback
Brady built his perfect quarterback by combining the best qualities of Rodgers, Mahomes, Jackson, and several league legends.
Tom Brady, considered by many to be the greatest player in NFL history, explained this Monday what his ideal quarterback would be like. And to put it together, I used a mix of current talent and historical figures. Among the names he mentioned were Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson, three active quarterbacks who, according to him, possess unique skills on the field. The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers player commented on his YouTube channel that the sport has changed, especially regarding quarterback protection. "We're in a time when if you hit a quarterback, you get a 15-yard penalty; before this era, they actually allowed hitting the quarterback. That's why I think they, along with Young, Favre, Luck, Brees, and Manning, would make up the ideal quarterback," he noted. Brady, the record holder for seven Super Bowl rings, broke down the construction of his perfect quarterback into different categories: mobility, stamina, accuracy, arm strength, and game awareness. In each category, he chose a player who, in his opinion, represents the best he has seen in decades.
Two Halves of the Same Perfect Passer
To talk about mobility, Brady recalled Steve Young's agility and Lamar Jackson's athleticism. "Steve Young had impressive footwork and running power. Perfect for that West Coast offense, his legs were pure speed. Lamar Jackson has incredible open-field mobility; I haven't seen his moves on anyone," he stated.
Stamina and physical strength were led by Brett Favre and Andrew Luck. About them, he commented: "In terms of strength, I'd go with 'Iron Man,' Brett Favre. He never missed a game; his toughness in taking hits was unique; an example of the old era of football. Andrew Luck was amazing at escaping plays where he was trapped."
As for accuracy, Brady had no doubts. He chose Aaron Rodgers, the current Steelers quarterback, and Drew Brees, a Super Bowl XLIV legend. “Aaron Rodgers can throw the ball with his fingertips to a receiver's chest faster than anyone I've ever seen. And if we're talking about precision, I'd go with Drew Brees, who could do so many things just with a flick of his wrist,” he pointed out.The intelligence to read defenses fell to Peyton Manning and Patrick Mahomes. Brady highlighted their mental qualities for breaking down coverages and making decisions under pressure. "Peyton was a master of this chess game; his game planning was incredible. From Patrick Mahomes, he took his ability to throw to all sorts of places and his spatial awareness of the field when defenders are close to him; that's his greatest weakness," he explained.
