Boar Head announces reopening of deli plant in Virginia
The plant was closed due to a listeria outbreak in its food that killed at least 10 consumers
The manufacturer and distributor of sausages, cheeses and condiments, Boar's Head Provision Co., Inc., recently announced the reopening of a deli plant located in Virginia, which had been closed due to a food poisoning of its foods with listeria.
However, after inspections with health regulators, the Jarratt, Virginia plant closed by the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration of the USA (FDA) will reopen in the coming months.
The listeria contamination would have caused the death of at least 10 people and more than a dozen sick, according to the USDA the plant did not have the appropriate sanitary conditions.
However, after exhaustive review by the entity it was currently possible to confirm that the facility fully complies with the guidelines and protocols established for the handling and safe production of food, the serious problems that led to the suspension have been fully resolved,” officials with the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement.
For its part, the company, which has been in business for more than 120 years and is headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, said in a statement that “Boar’s Head has an unwavering commitment to food safety and quality. This commitment is reflected in recent enhancements to our practices and protocols,” it said.
