Rubio points out Cuba as a promoter of the extreme left in the United States and the West
Washington launches a diplomatic offensive against political terrorism and places the Cuban regime at the center of its accusations
The Donald Trump Administration raised the tone of its confrontation with Cuba this Thursday by pointing out the Havana regime as one of the main drivers of the extreme left in the United States and the Western Hemisphere.
The accusation was made by the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, during the inauguration of the Ministerial Meeting on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism, a meeting held in Washington with representatives of more than 60 countries in America, Europe and Asia to coordinate an international strategy against what the White House considers a resurgence of far-left political terrorism.
In his speech, Rubio affirmed that the influence of the Cuban government transcends its borders and has contributed for decades to the consolidation of radical movements.
“The Cuban regime's vast intelligence and ideological network contributed to forging the extreme left in our country and in our hemisphere, and remains inextricably linked to extreme left groups and movements throughout the West and beyond its borders,” he declared.
The head of US diplomacy maintained that left-wing political terrorism constitutes “a real and transnational threat” that, although it has existed for decades, is currently experiencing a resurgence that requires a coordinated response between governments.
Rubio argued that international attention was focused for years on Islamist terrorism, while leftist-inspired violence was underestimated by governments and international organizations. “We can and must identify this threat and rebuild our counterterrorism architecture to defeat it,” he said.
Likewise, he assured that left-wing political violence has historically been tolerated or minimized.
“Leftist violence was not only justified; it was treated as something sacrosanct, a protected category in itself.”
The Secretary of State added that these movements can present themselves under different labels, anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, communist, anarchist or Marxist, but they maintain, as he said, the same ideological essence.
The State Department maintains that “far-left anti-government terrorism is now responsible for more attacks and plots in the United States than any other ideological category,” a statement that has served as the foundation for the new diplomatic and security strategy promoted by the White House.
