Rio Grande do Sul's governor, Eduardo Leite, told a news conference that the state had received 300 mm (11 inches) of rain in the past 24 hours. This caused floods and landslides at many places. Relief workers have to use helicopters to rescue people.

Brazil's Sao Paulo state also suffered floods and landslides due to heavy rains this year. Then 40 people had died in this disaster. Last year, 100 people lost their lives in a landslide caused by heavy rains in the city of Recife.
