India Receives Strong Backing from Kuwait in UNSC Membership Pursuit
Kuwait’s envoy expresses support for India’s permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, citing India’s global role and leadership in peacekeeping efforts.
India’s aspiration to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has received significant international endorsement, this time from Kuwait. In a recent development, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Tareq Albanai, offered vocal support during the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform, calling India a vital candidate for a permanent seat.
The statement by Albanai emphasized India’s continuous contributions to global peace, stability, and development. Highlighting India’s leadership in international affairs and its long-standing role in peacekeeping missions, Kuwait acknowledged India’s rightful place in global decision-making bodies.
Recognition of India’s Global Contributions
Albanai praised India’s role in sustainable development and its unwavering commitment to international cooperation. He pointed out India’s involvement in various UN missions and its representation of developing nations’ voices on international platforms. According to him, reforms in the UNSC are essential to reflect current geopolitical realities, and countries like India deserve inclusion as permanent members.
The Kuwaiti diplomat stressed that the existing structure of the UNSC, which predominantly reflects the post-World War II power structure, must evolve. India’s consistent support to multilateralism and its capacity to shoulder global responsibilities make it a natural candidate for a permanent seat.
India’s Persistent Campaign
India has been advocating for a reformed and more representative Security Council for years. As the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing economies, India believes that it must be part of any major decision-making process impacting international peace and security.
With Kuwait joining the chorus of nations supporting India’s bid, it adds to the growing momentum for reforming the UNSC. Other countries, including France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have also expressed varying degrees of support for India’s candidacy.
Support from the Global South
India’s campaign has found strong support from countries in the Global South who see India as a champion of their causes at global forums. India’s initiatives during its G20 presidency, including bringing African Union to the table and raising issues like climate finance and digital equity, have further strengthened its global stature.
Kuwait’s statement also aligns with the broader regional sentiment in the Gulf, where India maintains strong bilateral relations. With strategic, economic, and cultural ties deepening between India and Gulf nations, such endorsements are expected to become more frequent.
What Lies Ahead?
While support from countries like Kuwait boosts morale and global consensus, the path to reforming the UNSC is complicated. Structural changes require the approval of two-thirds of the UN General Assembly members and the consent of all five permanent members — the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China.
India, however, remains optimistic. Its increasing role in international diplomacy, peacekeeping, climate change initiatives, and digital inclusion makes it a strong and deserving candidate. Kuwait’s endorsement adds yet another pillar to India’s growing international support for a permanent UNSC seat.
