Border Patrol runs over a Guatemalan immigrant before arresting him (Video)
Video shows Border Patrol truck hitting an immigrant before his arrest. Witnesses and authorities offer opposing versions
A video captured by a security camera, and which is now viral on social media, shows the exact moment a Guatemalan immigrant is run over by a Border Patrol truck.
The incident occurred in the city of Rialto, California. The images also show how the man struggles to his feet to flee from the officers, but is ultimately pinned to the ground and arrested.
Eyewitnesses offered accounts that contradict the official report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In the video, the vehicle approaches from the side, and as it passes the immigrant, the passenger-side rearview mirror appears to strike him, causing him to lose his balance and fall heavily.
“They didn't even ask his name.”
People who witnessed the operation recounted the scene to local media and expressed their concern about the treatment the immigrant received after falling to the ground.
One of the witnesses, Sandra Garcia, told FOX 11 LA: “We were afraid for the man who was run over because they didn't even ask his name, they just picked him up and took him away.”
From a nearby dental clinic, employees came out to the parking lot after noticing the commotion. After reviewing the security camera footage, they confirmed what had happened. Hannah Sanchez stated, "They hit someone. They grabbed him, put him in the car, and then drove off."
The Official DHS Version
In a statement, cited by the media outlet, the DHS offered a very different explanation of the events captured by the security camera. According to the agency, the man was an undocumented Guatemalan immigrant who did not obey the agents' verbal commands and decided to flee.
In their report, they maintain that the individual was the one who hit the vehicle's rearview mirror during the pursuit.
Part of the official statement reads: “Federal law enforcement officers used their training to pursue the target on foot and had a pre-positioned vehicle to prevent the subject from escaping.”
DHS also stated that the man did not request medical attention after the incident and was detained “without further incident.” Authorities have not yet released his identity.
