Father Solalinde is confident that immigration reform can be achieved
Activists traveling to Washington ask the community to sign a letter requesting an update to the migrant registry
They had already traveled more than a thousand miles, from San Diego to Denver, when the caravan of activists, lawyers, and religious leaders from the “2 Million Letters” campaign stopped to hold a press conference. The goal was to encourage the community to visit www.wethepeople.com and sign their letter to pressure representatives in Washington to support immigration reform. The plan of the nearly 30 activists traveling in the caravan is to arrive in Washington on November 17, meet with legislators, and deliver two million signatures seeking to bring millions of immigrants out of the shadows, including Dreamers and TPS beneficiaries. Father Alejandro Solalinde, one of the participating priests and a defender of migrants in both Mexico and the United States for several decades, stated that immigration reform would be less in favor of migrants than a benefit to the United States. “With immigration reform, we are simply providing certainty to 11 million people who seek recognition and, therefore, to continue contributing to the wealth of this country through their tax payments,” Father Solalinde said. “Until now, they have obligations, but no rights.” The priest explained that he sees a great opportunity because, despite the current political crisis, paradoxically, reform could now be achieved, although everything will depend on the members of Congress, their sensitivity, and their vision. He added that many courageous voices are emerging, asserting that this is the moment to act. “It is time to continue fighting peacefully, with respect, but being firm, without giving up and without surrendering,” he stated. "When I first started coming to the US, I visited the migrant camps in 1971, a time when the children of Mexicans didn't want to speak Spanish; they were ashamed of their identity. But over time, I continued to see them, and they began to speak Spanish in public and started to feel proud," said Father Solalinde. “Today, those young people, including the rest of the Latino community, have master's and doctoral degrees.”They have gained important positions in politics and, most importantly, they have a sense of their identity.”
The priest stressed that we must have great faith in the change from this predatory capitalist system to a more humane one, which takes everyone into account, but especially the poor
“That is what we want to do with immigration reform. The closer we bring migrants to a full life in a country, the faster the transformation and humanization of this system, which has prioritized money above all else, will be.”
He added that the goal is to free our brothers and sisters who have a lot of money but live captive in the accumulation of wealth. “They don't realize it; they think they are successful, but the reality is that they are committing suicide. they are paying their taxes and contributing to the wealth of this society.”
She added that the violent raids being seen on television and Social media is affecting everyone, not just migrants and their families, but all citizens, whether Latino or white. “This has a domino effect; If one piece falls, little by little the whole system will begin to fall. “We are all in the same boat.”
He asked all migrants and those who read this article to sign the letter and encourage their friends and family on social media to do the same, so that more and more people can put pressure on the government. Only in this way, he said, will millions of families be able to live in peace and contribute to this nation with dignity.

The priest explained that we must continue fighting for less inequality and a better distribution of wealth so that everyone can enjoy this great nation.
Anita from Los Angeles, an activist traveling on the bus to Washington, said that immigration reform or updating the immigrant registry is the only way to solve a problem that has lasted for decades.
“Families cannot continue to be separated and treated as second-class citizens when they are paying their taxes and contributing to the wealth of this society.”
She added that the violent raids being seen on television and Social media is affecting everyone, not just migrants and their families, but all citizens, whether Latino or white.
