Former New York prison guard found guilty of murder in death of handcuffed inmate
David Kingsley was found guilty of murder in the death of Robert Brooks, who was brutally beaten in the infirmary of Marcy Correctional Facility
A former New York state prison guard was found guilty of murder in the death of a handcuffed inmate in a case that exposed violence inside the state's prisons and was captured on officers' body cameras.
The jury issued the verdicts in a courtroom near Downtown Marcy Correctional Facility, where Robert Brooks was repeatedly beaten by multiple officers on December 9, shortly after his arrival.
One guard guilty, two acquitted
Former officer David Kingsley was found guilty of first-degree murder and manslaughter, while former guards Mathew Galliher and Nicholas Kieffer were acquitted of all major charges.
Both had faced additional charges of second-degree gang assault, but the jury also found them not guilty. Kieffer also had a fourth charge of presenting a false document, of which he was also acquitted.
Beating caught on camera
According to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, Brooks was beaten three separate times the night he arrived at Marcy. The latest assault, which occurred in the prison's infirmary, was captured on a silent body camera and proved fatal for the inmate.
The case sparked outrage within the New York prison system. Five other guards had previously pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for their roles in the incident, which occurred in state custody.
Judicial authorities indicated that possible administrative sanctions and reforms to prison security protocols are still being evaluated. Kingsley's sentence is expected in the coming weeks.
