Fight between congressmen in Mexico goes viral
Two congresswomen from the National Action Party and one from Morena engaged in a hair-pulling fight after a discussion during a session
During an ordinary session in the Congress of Mexico City, after a discussion about a ruling, three congressmen got into a fight, which led the president of the board, Jesus Sesma, to intervene and suspend the session.
The fight between the legislators occurred on December 15 during the session where the deputies were discussing how the The Institute of Transparency, Access to Public Information and Protection of Personal Data of the Capital, after the autonomous bodies were eliminated at the federal level.
They took over the podium in protest
The confrontation occurred when legislators from the National Action Party (PAN) took over the podium to halt the discussion and prevent the vote, because they accused the Morena party of violating an agreement approved in committee.
Some videos circulated on social media showing Morena deputy Yuriri Ayala pulling another deputy's hair, and yet another deputy approaching to retaliate in kind. Amidst pushing and shouting, Jesus Sesma had to intervene to calm things down, but he preferred to temporarily suspend the session. PAN Deputy Injured PAN Deputy Claudia Perez was injured in the altercation and received medical attention inside the building. The three congresswomen were interviewed by journalist Carmen Aristegui; each gave her version of what happened during the session, which resulted in a disagreement over whether the body would have several people leading it, as had been approved in committee, or just one. When the PAN deputies were on the podium, a legislator from the ruling party grabbed Congresswoman Daniela Alvarez, and this sparked the fight. Congresswoman Ayala approached and forcefully pulled Alvarez's hair. In response, PAN legislator Claudia Perez confronted Ayala, pulling her hair as well. The president of Mexico spoke about the confrontation in Congress: “Very bad, it’s wrong that things have come to this,” Sheinbaum expressed during her press conference.
The president also urged legislators from all parties to avoid acts of violence.
“I believe this shouldn’t happen. One can be against a proposal. It’s reprehensible, it shouldn’t be,” Sheinbaum condemned.
