Mayor Bass calls Supreme Court ruling on LA raids an act of discrimination and racism
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass blasted the high court, calling its decision un-American and dangerous.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and leaders of several immigrant rights groups on Monday denounced the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow federal immigration agents to racially profile people in Southern California, calling it a blow to civil rights, with significant impact national.
“The Supreme Court… has now given the green light for law enforcement to profile and detain Angelenos based on their race,” said Mayor Karen Bass, “We will not tolerate this kind of discrimination and racism.”
“I want the entire nation to hear me when I say that this is not just an attack on immigrants in Los Angeles. It’s an attack on every single person in this city and in every city in our country,” Bass said of the Supreme Court’s decision.
The US highest court on Monday blocked a federal judge’s ruling that halted immigration arrests in Los Angeles based simply on a person’s appearance, the language they speak, or the job they do, in response to a lawsuit filed by affected individuals and community organizations, which began on June 6.
The city of Los Angeles joined the legal complaint against the administration of President Donald Trump, who accused the Supreme Court justices of “undermining” the rights of millions of people in the country.
The Supreme Court ruling allows federal agents to resume raids in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and two other counties while the case continues in the lower court.
In this sense, Bass assured that the city of Los Angeles “has been used as evidence of total dominance and unchecked power” by the Trump Administration, which has allowed it to advance with the militarization and takeover of Democratic cities.
Bass’s criticism was joined by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who described the Supreme Court as “the Grand Marshal of a racial terror parade” in Los Angeles.
“Trump’s private police now have permission to go after his family, and we’re all at risk, but we will continue to fight these abhorrent attacks on Californians,” the Democrat said.
For his part, Mohammad Tajsar, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, called Monday a sad day. He is one of the lead attorneys for the plaintiffs in the case.
“Today is a loss for people’s dignity, for people’s rights, for people’s safety and security,” he said.
