Migrant crossings on maritime routes from Mexico are increasing and costing up to $10,000 dollars
US authorities have warned that these voyages put the lives of migrants at risk due to the condition of the vessels.
The hardening of immigration policies in the United States has caused increasingly migrants to opt for clandestine maritime routes to trying to reach U.S. territory, paying up to $10,000 dollars to human smugglers for journeys considered high risk.
This is revealed by the La Silla Rota site, by detailing that departures are mainly made from the coasts of Baja California and Sonora to California, using small overloaded vessels operated by human trafficking networks.
The cited media adds that, despite the high cost and the danger that crossing by sea represents, this modality has increased due to the strengthening of surveillance at the land border and the immigration restrictions implemented by the United States government.
Between March and April of this year, the Coast Guard and the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), reported the detention of at least a hundred people of Mexican nationality who tried crossing in boats or boats.
US authorities have warned that these voyages put the lives of migrants at risk, since many vessels do not have minimum safety conditions, in addition to the fact that the trips are usually carried out at night to avoid being detected.
Regarding this situation, the consulate of Mexico in San Diego alerted on its social networks of the risk of illegally crossing the border in this way.
Meanwhile, the Tijuana Firefighters' Water Rescue Division also reported that they had again detected people trying to circumvent the international fence by swimming in the cold waters shared by Tijuana and San Diego.
The phenomenon occurs amid an increase in the costs charged by the so-called “coyotes”. Data from international organisms cited in previous reports indicate that Mexican migrants have come to pay between $7,000 and $8,000 dollars for trying to cross into the United States through different illegal routes.
