“I saw huge waves of solidarity”: Venezuelan volunteer gives details of the search and rescue efforts
Despite having no previous experience in rescue work, Cristofer Correia decided to join in due to the magnitude of the tragedy and the lack of personnel.
Rescue efforts in the areas affected by the earthquakes that shook northern Venezuela continue amid a shortage of personnel and specialized equipment, a situation that has forced hundreds of volunteers to participate in the search for survivors with minimal resources.
Cristofer Correia, one of the citizens who collaborated in the rescue of Arnaldo Carmona, who remained trapped for more than 30 hours under the rubble of a building in Caraballeda, La Guaira state, described the difficult panorama that emergency teams face.
"Everything is done with nails. There is a lack of hands and tools," he said in an interview with Infobae, pointing out that picks, chisels, cordless grinders, gloves and protective equipment are needed to speed up search tasks.
Correia explained that, despite having no previous experience in rescue work, he decided to join in due to the magnitude of the tragedy and the lack of specialized personnel. According to what he told the aforementioned media, for every professional rescuer, around ten volunteers participate.
He also claimed to have seen exhausted firefighters, some of them falling asleep during relief shifts due to the long work days.
He indicated that, in the most delicate phase of each rescue, the emergency bodies assume control to minimize risks during the extraction of trapped people.
Despite the difficulties, the solidarity shown by the Venezuelan population stood out, with citizens organizing collection centers and transporting food, water, medicine and supplies to the most affected areas.
La Guaira is one of the states with the greatest damage after the two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 recorded this week. According to official figures, more than a hundred buildings collapsed and tens of thousands of families were affected.
While search operations continue, specialized international teams have joined the rescue efforts to support Venezuelan authorities in locating survivors in the rubble.
