Pato O Ward Says Goodbye to IndyCar 2025 with an Accident in Nashville
The Mexican dominated the last race from pole, but a blowout on lap 127 left him with no chance of victory
The Music City Superspeedway was the scene of a bitter ending for Pato O'Ward. The Arrow McLaren driver had started the day with everything in his favor: he started from pole position and led for much of the final race of the IndyCar championship. However, a front tire exploded at over 200 mph and he sent him crashing into the wall, abruptly ending his hopes of winning in Nashville.
“Hopefully, Firestone can do something next year, because we're the ones who hit the road at 200 mph and you feel those hits,” he said after the impact, uninjured but clearly frustrated.
From hope to misfortune
O'Ward showed solidity from the start, setting the pace ahead of Christian Lundgaard and Alex Palou. The duel with the Spaniard was one of the most exciting moments of the afternoon: lap after lap, both drove to the limit, with maneuvers that lifted fans from their seats.
The race was also marred by accidents. Rasmussen retired on the first lap, while Malukas was sent packing after hitting the wall while trying to overtake Louis Foster. Every yellow flag seemed like an obstacle, but the Mexican always regained the lead.
Lap 127 changed everything. The front right tire of his car collapsed and left him out of control in Turns 1 and 2. The impact forced him to retire, just when he seemed poised to close out the year with a resounding victory.
Season Summary
Although Nashville denied him the celebration, O'Ward left with an important achievement: he finished as runner-up in the 2025 IndyCar, his best result in the category. The Monterrey native surpassed 500 points in the overall standings and demonstrated consistency on a schedule where he faced established champions on equal terms.
