California state senator Sabrina Cervantes filed a claim against the city of Sacramento for illegal arrest and defamation in connection with her May arrest for allegedly driving under the influence.

Cervantes, who represents parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties in southern California has denied the allegation that she was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of her crash.

The senator said that while seeking medical attention after being struck by a large SUV near the state Capitol, she was approached by officers and involuntarily detained by hospital officials for several hours.
