A McDonald's franchise must pay more than $1,000 to former employees
Washington McDonald's franchise must compensate job applicants more than $1,000 following class action settlement
Can you imagine going to apply for a job, being rejected and still getting paid? This will happen for hundreds of people who applied for a job at McDonald's restaurants run by a franchise in Washington state and who could receive a payment of more than $1,000. We explain all the details about this agreement with the franchised company so that you know if you could be one of the lucky ones to receive this payment at a time of high general prices in the United States.
The settlement follows a class-action lawsuit that accused KTC LC, franchisee of several McDonald's restaurants in Washington, of failing to include salary information in its job vacancies, a mandatory requirement under state law. Now, those who are part of the affected group could obtain automatic compensation without needing to initiate another legal process.
State law requires companies to provide that information from the job posting. The measure is part of the Washington State Equal Pay and Opportunity Act, designed to promote greater transparency in hiring processes and reduce potential wage inequalities.
According to the lawsuit, job postings posted between January 1, 2023 and March 13, 2025 did not clearly display the salary range or pay scale for the available positions. Now, those who are part of the affected group could obtain automatic compensation without needing to initiate another legal process.
Although KTC LLC denied wrongdoing, it decided to settle the case through an out-of-court settlement. With this, it seeks to avoid higher legal costs and continue with litigation in court. The total compensation fund amounts to $681,600 dollars. Some of that money will also cover legal fees and administrative costs related to the class action lawsuit.
According to the settlement documents, each eligible class member could receive approximately $1,093.40. However, the final amount could still be modified depending on the total number of people receiving the benefit and other expenses associated with the case.
Eligible people are those who applied for employment at one of the McDonald's restaurants operated by KTC LLC during the indicated period and whose job offer did not include information about the salary or pay range. In most cases, beneficiaries will not have to complete additional procedures to receive the money.
The deal administrators have already begun contacting potential group members through official notifications. Those who received that communication will get the payment automatically, as long as they didn't opt out of the deal before the deadline set last year.
Physical checks will be sent to the addresses registered in the process files. In addition, payments are expected to begin approximately 30 days after the final approval hearing, scheduled for August 30.
What is a class action lawsuit?
Class action lawsuits allow multiple people with similar claims to join together in a single court case against a company or organization. Generally, one or more plaintiffs file the initial allegation and, subsequently, other affected persons may join as members of the class.
These types of processes are common when there is possible damage that affects many people at the same time. Some examples include cases of employment discrimination, false advertising, environmental pollution, or failure to comply with consumer protection laws.
In many scenarios, companies choose to reach financial settlements before the case goes to trial. In exchange for receiving compensation, group members typically waive future legal actions related to the same issue.
