Social Security: who will receive almost $1,000 on December 1
Social Security doesn't just send retirement and disability payments. This December 1st, a social group will receive almost $1,000: we tell you who
We are closing out November and some Social Security beneficiaries will receive a payment as early as December 1st. The Social Security Administration's (SSA) 2025 payment schedule is entering its final month, and this first payment is for a specific group of people. On December 1, payments are directed exclusively to those enrolled in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. This group exceeds 7.4 million beneficiaries in the United States, according to the most recent figures released by the SSA. Unlike retirement and disability benefits, SSI sends payments to people with limited financial resources who meet age or disability criteria. SSI has different rules than other Social Security benefits. It does not depend on work history or contributions made to the system. It is a need-based program. It is designed for people 65 and older, adults with disabilities, or children with disabilities who have very low incomes or assets. The average monthly payment received by beneficiaries is around $717.84, although the support can be higher. The maximum federal amount for an individual beneficiary is $967 per month. For qualifying couples, the amount can reach up to $1,450. In addition, some states add their own supplemental payment. The SSA indicates that this additional help depends on where the beneficiary lives. December will also be a month with double payments for SSI recipients. The SSA will advance the January 2026 check to December 31, because January 1 is a federal holiday. This adjustment occurs whenever the payment date falls on a non-business day. Another relevant point is that benefits will increase in 2026. The SSA confirmed a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of 2.8%, and those receiving SSI will see that increase reflected in the check that arrives on December 31. The rest of the Social Security payments, specifically retirement, survivors, and SSDI,The traditional payment schedule based on birthdate will be followed. People born between the 1st and 10th will receive their payment on December 10th. Those born between the 11th and 20th will receive their payment on December 17th. Finally, those born between the 21st and 31st will receive their payment on December 24th. Beneficiaries who began receiving payments before May 1997 have a different schedule and will receive their payment on December 3rd, regardless of their birthdate. If a person receives both SSI and regular Social Security benefits, the payments will be deposited separately. In December, the SSI check will arrive on the 1st, and the other deposit will arrive on the 3rd. The SSA continues to move toward a system with virtually no paper checks. Today, most payments are sent electronically. Beneficiaries can receive them via direct deposit or through the Direct Express card, an option designed for those without a bank account.
