Baja California official is shot and her husband dies during the attack
Councilor María de Jesús Quijada was transferred to a hospital in the US where she remains under medical care, while her husband died at the scene.
The councilor of Morena in the Tecate City Council, María de Jesús Quijada Maldonado, was attacked with bullets along with her husband, Jesús Pereida Ruiz, when both were in front of their home.
As a result of the attack, Pereida lost her life, while the official was seriously injured and was transferred to receive specialized medical care.
According to the first reports, the attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon, when armed individuals intercepted the vehicle in which the couple was traveling and opened fire repeatedly.
Jesús Pereida died at the scene, while the councilor was helped by emergency bodies, according to media such as the weekly Zeta Tijuiana.
Later reports indicate that the councilor was transferred to a hospital in the United States, where she remains under medical care.
María de Jesús Quijada is councilor of the Tecate City Council, in Baja California, for the period 2024-2027. Within the Cabildo he chairs the Social Welfare Commission and also participates in the Water, Child Protection, Youth and Sports commissions, among others.
Before taking office, she was a promoter of social programs and an active member of the Morena party in Baja California.
Her husband, Jesús Pereida Ruiz, also had experience in the public sphere. He participated in political activities linked to Morena and performed functions related to security and human rights issues, in addition to collaborating in different electoral campaigns in the entity.
After the attack, the Attorney General's Office of the State of Baja California began investigations to clarify the motive for the attack and identify those responsible.
So far, the authorities have not reported any detainees nor have they confirmed any line of investigation.
