Shooting in Oregon leaves at least three dead and one police officer injured after domestic dispute
After hours of tension and a confinement order for residents, the alleged perpetrator was arrested and faces multiple charges
An alleged case of domestic violence led to a deadly shooting Sunday afternoon in Sandy, a small city east of Portland, Oregon, leaving at least three people dead and a police officer injured.
Sandy Police Department Chief Patrick Huskey said in a statement that officers responded around 4:00 p.m. to respond to a report related to a domestic dispute and shots fired.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers were met with armed fire and responded to the attack, which triggered an intense exchange of gunfire.
A police officer was injured during the confrontation
During the shooting, one of the officers was hit by multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities indicated that the officer was evacuated by helicopter to a medical center and that his condition was stabilized. According to Huskey, he is expected to survive the injuries sustained.
The agent's identity has not been released.
Authorities confirmed that several people were found dead at the scene. It later emerged that at least three people died during the incident.
At this time, investigators have not revealed the identities of the victims or the exact circumstances under which the murders occurred.
The case remains under investigation by the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
Hours of tension and a confinement order
After the initial shooting, the suspect barricaded himself in a residence located in the 39500 block of Evans Street, which began an extensive police operation.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots before 4:00 p.m., followed by an intense mobilization of patrols and emergency vehicles.
Authorities issued a stay-at-home order for an area southeast of Sandy while dozens of officers established a security perimeter around the property.
Officers from several agencies participated in the operation, including the Oregon State Police, Gresham, Happy Valley and Wilsonville police, as well as agents from Clackamas and Washington counties.
Specialized armored vehicles were also deployed in the area during the confrontation.
Suspect surrendered after hours of searching
The situation ended around 8:00 p.m., when the suspect surrendered to authorities without being injured.
Police reported that there is no longer any threat to the community.
The detainee was identified as Bryan Moore, 38, who was later booked into the Clackamas County Jail.
According to court records, Moore initially faces: three counts of murder, two counts of kidnapping, one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a disqualified person and one count of attempted commission of a crime.
Authorities noted that the charges could be modified or expanded as the investigation progresses and new elements are presented to the courts.
Investigation remains open
Police Chief Patrick Huskey asked the community for patience while investigators process the scene, conduct interviews and reconstruct the sequence of events.
“I know that many people are grieving,” said the official. “This has been a traumatic event for our community and for the Sandy Police Department.”
Authorities continue to work to determine what exactly happened from the arrival of the officers to the beginning of the exchange of gunfire, as well as the relationship between the suspect and the fatal victims.
