The Encounter
Cameron recounted that he met the two suspects at an open-air bar in Ipanema, a place he frequented since arriving in Brazil in February to learn Portuguese and create vlogs about the country.
“Two men approached, struck up a conversation, and offered me a beer. This had happened before, so it didn't seem suspicious to me,” the Canadian wrote on social media.
According to him, after drinking the beer, he began to feel strangely drunk, despite having consumed little alcohol. The suspects then took him to the apartment where he was staying. “They drugged me to render me unconscious, stole all my money and phone, and evidence indicates I was sexually assaulted,” he wrote. Cameron stated that he lost approximately $3,000 and that his bank and email accounts were hacked. The assailants allegedly changed his passwords, biometric data, and digital access, preventing him from immediately recovering his financial information. After regaining consciousness, the tourist contacted the Canadian Consulate, received preventative medication, and filed a formal complaint with the Civil Police, who took his statement and conducted a forensic examination. Despite the trauma, the Canadian, who lived in Brazil for nine months, wanted to defend the country and thank his Brazilian friends who helped him after the attack.“This was the most traumatic experience of my life, but it was the work of two evil men, not Brazil. My Brazilian friends were incredible; they helped me with food, banking, rent, and cleaning,” he stated. Golinsky reported that he will leave Brazil to travel to Los Angeles and then return to Vancouver, where he plans to seek psychological support and assess his financial losses.
