Robert De Niro, Viola Davis and more famous say goodbye to Robert Duvall
Reactions to the death of actor Robert Duvall at 95 years old were swift on social media. We share some of them with you
The film industry is in mourning due to the passing of actor Robert Duvall, known for his roles in iconic films such as "The Godfather" and "Breakout." The news, confirmed by the celebrity's wife, was shared through a heartfelt Facebook post detailing his final moments. "Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, dear friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort," wrote Argentine actress Luciana Pedraza. Just hours after his passing was announced, several celebrities took to social media to bid him a final farewell and celebrate the film star's legacy. Adam Sandler was one of the first to share the sad news, having co-starred with Robert Duvall in the film "Hustle." His farewell came through a heartfelt message on Instagram, in which he highlighted his talent and the human qualities that characterized him.
“Such a wonderful man to talk to and laugh with. I loved him so much. We all loved him. So many legendary films to choose from. Watch them when you can. We send our condolences to his wife Luciana and all his family and friends,” he stated in his post.
Al Pacino
One of the reactions that quickly went viral on various platforms was that of Al Pacino, the actor with whom he collaborated on the film “The Godfather.” According to a statement released by Variety magazine, this is a painful loss not only for the entertainment world, but for the entire world.
“It was an honor to have worked with Robert Duvall. He was a natural actor, as they say, his connection to acting, his understanding, and his phenomenal gift will always be remembered. I will miss him,” he stated.
Robert De Niro
Despite not sharing the screen directly,Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro crossed paths indirectly in the world of "The Godfather," as the latter starred in the sequel, playing the young Vito Corleone. This led to a close friendship between them, and the farewell, though brief, is deeply painful: "God bless Bobby. I hope I live to 95. Rest in peace," the actor wrote. Viola Davis, the Oscar winner, joined in the expressions of affection for her co-star in the thriller "Widows" (2018), a man she admired for his contribution to the film industry and whose legacy, she affirmed, will live on for a long time. On her social media platforms, the actress wrote: "I have always been in awe of your commanding portrayals of men who were both silent and commanding in their humanity. You were a giant. An icon... Greatness never dies." Remain a gift. Rest well, sir. Your name will be spoken. Let choirs of angels sing your rest.”
Walton Goggins
Meanwhile, Walton Goggins, who had the opportunity to participate in The Apostle (a film written, directed, and starring Duvall), posted a lengthy tribute that reads: “Bobby Duvall, the greatest storyteller of all time, has just left us. He was my friend. My mentor. I have had these photos with me for 30 years. They were taken by the station photographer on the set of THE APOSTLE, the film he wrote and directed,” he began.
In his post, he asserted that the impact the film star had on his life is unparalleled: “I was 24 years old. The privilege of working with this man, of knowing this man, remains the most important experience of my life. He was my North Star, my hero,” he added.
Michael Keaton
The celebration of Duvall's legacy and life continued to be present from his former stage colleagues. Such was the case with Michael Keaton, who acted with him in “The Paper,” directed by Ron Howard.
In his reflection, Keaton said: “Another friend falls. I acted with him and became his friend. We shared a great afternoon on my porch talking about horses. He was greatness personified as an actor. RIP RD.”
Josh Gad
Star Josh Gad joined the list of farewells, in his case from his Threads account, with a recounting of Duvall's projects that marked his life: “Another day. Another iconic and irreplaceable loss. Duvall was simply one of the greatest who ever did it. From 'The Godfather' movies to 'Apocalypse Now,' from 'The Apostle' to 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' he wasn't just in film, he defined it across eras. RIP,” he lamented.
