Sophie Turner is confirmed as Lara Croft and the filming starts in 2026

The anticipated action series 'Tomb Raider' for Amazon Prime Video already has an official date for the start of its production: January 19, 2026.
The project, which adapts the legendary video game saga, also confirms the A rumor that has been circulating since last year: actress Sophie Turner ('Game of Thrones', 'X-Men: Apocalypse') will be in charge of giving life to the intrepid archaeologist Lara Croft.
The official announcement by Amazon MGM Studios puts an end to the speculation and confirms the stellar signing.
The series, which was finally greenlit in May 2024, was first announced on the platform in January 2023. Turner's involvement was first made public in November 2024.
Sophie Turner thus becomes the latest actress to take on the role of an iconic character, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, who played her in two films, and Alicia Vikander, who starred in the 2018 film reboot.
The creative team
The mind behind the adaptation is acclaimed creator and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve), who will be in charge of creation, writing, and executive producing.
For this ambitious undertaking, she will be joined by Chad Hodge ('Wayward Pines') as co-showrunner and executive producer. Jonathan van Tulleken (Shogun) will be directing and executive producing, completing a luxury team.
Waller-Bridge expressed her excitement in a statement: “I am so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team.”
She continued: “It’s not often you get to make a series of this magnitude with a character you grew up in love with. Everyone on board is incredibly passionate about Lara and is just as quirky, brave and hilarious as she is. Get your gadgets out!… Croft is coming!”
The executive production is being handled by a consortium that includes Crystal Dynamics (developers of the game), Wells Street Productions (owned by Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins), Story Kitchen,Legendary Television, and Hodge and van Tulleken themselves.

The development of the series is the result of an agreement between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, channeled through Story Kitchen, which has a first-look agreement with the studio to expand the Tomb Raider universe in both series and films.
